A rocket has been fired from southern Lebanon towards Israel, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.
The news agency said the rocket was fired from a location near the southern
town of Marjayoun, about six miles north of the Israeli border. It was not
immediately clear who fired the rocket or whether it caused any damage or
casualties.
"An explosion was heard. Soldiers are searching the area. The cause is
still being investigated," an Israeli military spokesman said. A second
Israeli military source said the explosion was probably caused by a mortar.
The incident came amid heightened tensions in the region over Syria's civil
war. Damascus has said it will respond to Israeli air strikes earlier this
month against suspected Iranian missiles in Syria destined for the Lebanese
militant group Hezbollah.
In addition to Hezbollah, militant Palestinian groups are also known to
operate in south Lebanon.
Earlier on Sunday, two rockets hit Hezbollah strongholds in south Beirut,
tearing through an apartment and car dealership, wounding four Syrian
workers.
